event spotlight: live for art, philly live arts festival

The Philadelphia Live Arts festival closed its doors this weekend and we had the pleasure of being invited to a showing of Traces, an urban circus by 7 Fingers.  We went with a 5 year old and an 8 year old in tow and it’s hard to tell who of the 4 of us had the best time.  The 8 year old loved the aerial “girl in the red dress” who spun and flew from the sky.  The 5 year old loved “the guy who was bounced off a plank and flew through the air.”  I was tied between the man who did unimaginable feats with a silver hoop (it was not your typically hula hooping, that’s for sure) and the man who juggled, flipped, balanced and more with a Chinese yo-yo.  Liz, our managing editor was amazed that people could flip through a tiny circle 7 feet above ground and equally enamored by the artistic quality of the whole production.  The kids couldn’t quite appreciate (in fact, although this show was recommended for all ages, it was probably more appropriate for 5 and up) the incredible amount of strength, flexibility and overall athleticism of these performers but were nevertheless wowed by incredible feats, energetic music and of course, the use of skateboards! The adults left with an appreciation of all of the above plus most importantly, a reminder about how powerful and important live performance is.  So, with that, we at Philly Parent Circle, hope to continue to bring these reminders and opportunities to support live art (and all forms of art!) in our neighborhood and look forward to highlighting and inviting you to events and festivals just like this for all of our community to enjoy.
